Adult Learning and Education (ALE) is a cornerstone of personal, community, and societal development. EAEA’s annual theme of 2024 on “Transforming Lives, Communities, and Society” highlights the immense potential of ALE to drive positive change. It once again emphasises that ALE is not just a tool for professional development, but a human right and a fundamental public good.

At its core, ALE is a tool for empowerment. It equips individuals to stand up for their rights, engage meaningfully with society, and contribute to more inclusive and sustainable futures. ALE enables people to navigate life’s complexities, fostering critical thinking and self-confidence while enriching societal cohesion.

Through its 2024 annual theme, EAEA showcases ALE as a powerful force for change amid challenges like technological advancements, environmental crises, and growing inequalities.

A year of reflection, celebration, and advocacy

In 2024, EAEA engaged stakeholders, educators, and policymakers to emphasise ALE’s role in addressing pressing global issues, from digital literacy to climate action. Initiatives such as the EAEA Grundtvig Award celebrated success stories and offered practical examples of overcoming challenges.

These efforts underscored the central message of the newly updated EAEA’s Manifesto for Adult Learning in the 21st Century: education is one of the most powerful tools to foster transformation and build resilience. ALE is not a privilege but a shared responsibility, requiring collective efforts to unlock its full potential.

Recognising ALE’s transformative potential requires structural and policy support. Based on the discussions and experiences of the thematic year, EAEA has made several recommendations to enhance ALE’s impact. Read the recommendations on our background paper! The background paper aims to capture the insights, special moments and lessons learned in 2024 and will serve as an inspiration for further advocacy and awareness-raising.

Towards flexible learning pathways

As EAEA enters the final year of its three-year strategy on Transformative Adult Learning and Education, the focus shifts to flexible learning pathways. The aim is to deepen understanding of transformation, addressing societal areas where ALE can make the greatest impact while continuing to challenge systemic barriers.

Ultimately, ALE’s true potential lies in fostering a culture of lifelong learning where individuals and communities thrive. As the EAEA manifesto states: “Let us create a Learning Europe where we all benefit from the power and joy of learning.”
