JUDO4LLC: Judo for Lifelong Learning Communities

The ‘Judo for Lifelong Learning Communities’ (Judo4LLC) project has the purpose of using Judo philosophy to build a structured approach for personal and social development in the Judo community. This project addresses the growing need for new pedagogic means that bring together sports with lifelong learning competencies, aligned with broader European strategies for competence building and social inclusion.

Judo was founded in 1882 by Jigoro Kano, a young jujitsu participant, who established the Kodokan training center, meaning “a school for studying the way or path.” Judo is based on two fundamental principles: Seiryoku Zenyo (maximum efficient use of mental and physical energy) and Jita Kyoei (mutual prosperity for self and others). Kano believed these principles extended beyond sport, serving as a foundation for personal development and societal well-being. The Judo4LLC project aims to fill a gap in integrating sports, especially Judo, into lifelong learning programs. While Judo promotes respect, discipline, and mutual welfare, these ideals are rarely consistently applied to participants’ development. These principles are often thought to be learned spontaneously through practice, regardless of a club’s or coach’s efforts.

Main objectives

  1. To create a scalable knowledge exchange framework within the Judo community by developing a club-to-club and peer-to-peer lifelong learning model aligned with EU Key Competences for Lifelong Learning. Supported by the Judo4LLC platform, this model will connect Judo participants across Europe through profiles, forums, collaboration spaces, and resources to share expertise and needs. It will foster mutual learning, collaboration, engagement, leadership, and adaptability.
  2. To establish a learning community where Judo clubs and participants share skills, knowledge, and experiences. This space will encourage collaboration, continuous learning, and growth of individual skills and the Judo ecosystem. Building this online environment will foster lifelong learning, strengthen community bonds, and support the long-term success of Judo and beyond.
  3. To leverage Judo’s core values and develop lifelong skills such as leadership, adaptability, and cultural understanding. This will foster active, inclusive participation in peer learning, promoting gender equality, intergenerational learning, and cross-cultural exchange by involving underrepresented groups and encouraging mentorship within the Judo community.
