VOICES-Voices of Migrants Creating Empathy and Social Cohesion

The aim of this project is to strive for social inclusion and change by improving and extending the supply of high-quality learning opportunities for adults, through the creation of a comprehensive counter archive of oral history in Europe that can be used for language learning.

The VOICES (Voices of Immigrants Creating Empathy & Social Cohesion) project develops methods and materials that integrate migration experiences and the perspectives of migrants into language learning and basic education courses. It promotes learner-centered and participatory approaches that focus on oral history methods, digital tools, and interactive methods. The aim is to strengthen learners’ motivation and, above all, to make their voices (the voices of the interviewees and the voices of the learners conducting the interviews) heard. By focusing on the perspectives of migrants, the project promotes intercultural understanding and aims to break down stereotypes. It encourages dialogue between different generations and communities through the commonality of migration experiences. The methodology emphasizes inclusive and community-based learning.

Main outputs

  • The “counter-archive” resulting from the interviews aims to place migration in a different context, focusing on a personal and emotional perspective.
  • The products (videos/audios, texts, podcasts) will be available on a platform. The materials can be used for language courses and other groups working with migrants.

Target groups of the project:

  • the broad adult education community including adult educators and adult education providers
  • adult learners and specifically adult learners that either as individuals or as communities have been subjected to discriminatory behaviours towards their gender, social status, race
and/or culture and academic/ learning performance
  • policy makers, workers for adult education provision and researchers with a European gravitas in matters of creating safe spaces for learning, social inclusion and battling inequalities
