The city of Larissa, Greece, offers adult learning courses and awareness-raising activities targeting the Roma community, senior citizens and refugees. The overall aim is to improve physical and mental health, to promote critical thinking and to foster a culture of learning. During this workshop, representatives of the initiative will share how they implemented the programme, and how they have been attempting to resolve new challenges in the face of a global pandemic.
Get to know Dimitris Deligiannis
Dr. Dimitris Deligiannis is a professor-consultant at the Hellenic Open University and a trainer of adult trainers in multiple programs emphasizing on education for vulnerable social groups. In 2019, he was elected as the Chairman of the City Council of Larissa. He is, also, Vice President of Prevention Centre of Larissa (Orpheus) and coordinator at the scientific board of «Citizens’ University», a new institution for adult education in local level of the Municipality of Larissa. His bachelor studies were on Literature and Law. His MA studies were on Social Planning and in Organization and Management in Education. He obtained his PhD at the Hellenic Open University on the field of adult education and transformative learning, especially in vulnerable groups. He has published numerous articles in books and science magazines.
During the period 2014 – 2019, he was Deputy Mayor for Social Policy, responsible for Lifelong Learning and Chairman of the Committee for the “Larissa – Learning City” for which the City of Larissa was awarded as member of global network of “Learning Cities” from the Lifelong Learning Institute (UIL) of UNESCO at 2017 in Cork (Ireland).
Get to know Alexis Kokkos
Alexis Kokkos is Emeritus Professor of Adult Education at the Hellenic Open University, Chairman of the Hellenic Adult Education Association, co-convener of the ESREA’s Network on Transformative Processes and member of the Stewards Committee of the International Transformative Learning Association. He has been awarded for his Exemplary Service and Leadership within the Transformative Learning Community. He is the Scientific Responsible of Citizens’ University of Larissa.
