Escola Árvore – Centro Qualifica

Who we are
Escola das Virtudes is a non-profit education cooperative and the oldest UNESCO Associated School in Portugal, rooted in the historic centre of Porto. As the founding and managing entity of Escola Artística e Profissional Árvore and its Centro Qualifica Árvore, it brings together artistic tradition and adult education, creating learning spaces where experience, creativity and personal journeys are valued.

Deeply connected to its territory, Centro Qualifica Árvore works side by side with communities, institutions and local partners to open pathways for adults who wish to return to learning. Its work is defined by a strong sense of inclusion, cultural awareness and respect for individual life stories.

What we do
Centro Qualifica Árvore supports adults in building meaningful qualification pathways, from
guidance to certification, recognising knowledge acquired throughout life and work. Each
process is developed with attention to the individual, valuing their experience as a starting point
for new opportunities.
Learning takes place both within the school and outside its boundaries, in close connection with
communities, workplaces, and social contexts. This social proximity enables the organization to
reach those who are often distant from education and to create more flexible, welcoming
learning environments. Alongside qualification, Centro Qualifica Árvore promotes literacy, digital skills and personal
development, supporting to more confident, autonomous and active citizens, while
strengthening the link between education, culture and society.

Best practices/projects/publications
While Centro Qualifica Árvore is widely recognised for its vocational education for young people, its work in adult education has grown as a natural extension of this experience. Through the Centro Qualifica, adults are supported in finding their way back to learning, transforming their life and work experiences into recognised qualifications.

This approach extends beyond the school itself. Through initiatives such as Passeio das Qualificações, Centro Qualifica Árvore works directly within communities, reaching adults with very low levels of education and creating opportunities for literacy, digital learning, and personal development in familiar, accessible environments. Learning also happens in unexpected places, in neighborhood spaces, companies, or health institutions, where education becomes part of everyday life. These experiences reflect a commitment to meeting people where they are, respecting their pace, and building trust over
time.
At the same time, Árvore remains connected to a wider European context, participating in cooperation projects that support the ongoing development of its work in adult education.
